Virtual Reality at Colorado State University

Virtual reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (XR) offer significant potential in the areas of teaching, learning and research.

Virtual Art Gallery

The Virtual Art Gallery was a proof-of-concept experience designed by VR interns across multiple disciplines (architecture, computer science, graphic design, and electronic art) to showcase the ability VR has to display both real-world objects and purely digital works side-by-side from anywhere in the world. The project also showcases the benefits of real-time virtual touring and the 1:1 experience of both interior and exterior spaces for architectural drafting. Cross discipline cooperation was key to the project in order to create the best gallery experience using the new platform and tools provided by VR.

Human Virtual Anatomy

Project:  The ‘Human Virtual Anatomy Project’, developed by Tod Clapp and Chad Eitel, allows students to interact with a mixture of virtual 3D models and CT scan data using VR headsets to learn human anatomy. The project grew from a desire to help students visualize the spatial relationships between the muscles, bones, nerves, etc. of the human body, which has traditionally been done using 2D images and cadavers. The project even has the capability to have multiple students inhabit the same virtual space, allowing them to collaborate and learn together.

Vet VR

The CSU veterinary VR (VetVR) program provides students space to explore, learn, and practice complex veterinary procedures, such as applying anesthetics during operations. Visit the Virtual Reality for Veterinary Training web page for more info online.

VR Concussion Project

Researchers at CSU have created a virtual reality project to evaluate athlete performance after they experienced mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) such as concussions. The project mimics the demands of traditional evaluations of athletes without placing them into the potential safety hazards associated with traditional post mTBI evaluations, such as falls or hits to the head.
