This email is being sent to PIs with open federal awards, deans, research associate deans, and unit heads whose units have federal sponsored projects.
Dear Colleagues,
As you are likely aware, parts of the federal government shut down on Friday night. We are actively monitoring the situation and will keep you updated. Last week, the Senate voted on a five-bill funding package and a two-week continuing resolution for the Department of Homeland Security. As of this morning, the House is scheduled to vote this afternoon on the rule, which is a precursor to bill passage.
Congress has already funded many of the science agencies we work with and they remain open. These include USDA, NASA, NOAA, NIST, USGS, NSF, and DOE. By contrast, DOD, NIH, DOT, and Dept. of Education are impacted by the lapse in funding.
Please continue to work on research and other sponsored projects with obligated funds, unless you are told by a federal official to stop work (please notify us if this occurs). During the partial shutdown at affected agencies:
- Assume that proposal submission and reporting deadlines remain in place unless the agency publishes a change.
- Agencies are unlikely to respond to emails or other outreach.
- Agencies will not issue new awards, obligations, or modifications, nor will they review proposals.
- Access to federal facilities will be limited, with most research facilities closed.
- Student financial aid and payments to universities are not typically impacted.
Please reach out to Meg Suter ([email protected]) or me if you have any questions.
Best,
Cass
