This email is being sent to PIs with open federal awards, research associate deans, unit leads whose units have federal sponsored projects, deans, directors, and department heads, and executive leadership.
Dear Colleagues,
As you are likely aware, the federal government shut down early this morning. Presidential administrations have latitude about how they handle operations during shutdowns, and each shutdown is somewhat different. While we cannot predict the duration or exactly how this administration will manage the shutdown, at this time please continue work on research and other sponsored projects with obligated funds, unless you are told by a federal official to stop work.
During the shutdown:
- Assume that proposal submission and reporting deadlines remain in place unless the agency publishes a change.
- Agencies are unlikely to respond to emails or other outreach.
- Agencies will not issue new awards, obligations, or modifications, nor will they review proposals.
- Access to federal facilities will be limited, with most research facilities closed.
Each agency has its own plan for how they manage a lapse in funding. You can find a list of those agency specific plans using this online resource. We will provide updates on the university’s federal updates website and research-specific advice on the federal research update website.
Your work individually and collectively is important and vital for the state, our nation and the world. We are here to help and support you as we navigate these challenges. Thank you for your commitment and dedication. Please reach out to Meg Suter ([email protected]) or me if you need help navigating disruptions.
Best,
Cass
