Written by Lori Ann (McAllester) Schultz<\/strong><\/p>\n It was called\u00a0 \u201cindirect cost\u201d yesterday.<\/p>\n Now we refer to it as \u201cF&A\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIndirect\u201d had a negative connotation they say.<\/p>\n It\u2019s more meaningful to emphasize \u2026 the \u201cF\u201d and the \u201cA\u201d.<\/p>\n Call it indirect cost, overhead, or F&A.<\/p>\n The fact of the matter is \u2026 some still don\u2019t want to pay.<\/p>\n \u201cI want the money for my research,\u201d the PIs all say.<\/p>\n So don\u2019t make me pay that F\u2026\u2019n A!<\/p>\n I am approached for waivers each and every day.<\/p>\n But my \u201cpat\u201d response to them is \u2026 \u201cno way!\u201d<\/p>\n And the Feds are no help \u2014 they\u2019re tough to sway.<\/p>\n We propose a rate increase; \u201cwrong direction\u201d they say.<\/p>\n We give and they take, it all goes their way.<\/p>\n I just pray they don\u2019t cap the \u201cF\u201d like they did the \u201cA\u201d.<\/p>\n University administration, SPA, DA.<\/p>\n Depreciation on equipment, buildings, and walkways.<\/p>\n These are all real costs that someone must pay.<\/p>\n If the sponsor refuses, they don\u2019t just \u2026 go away!<\/p>\n My job at \u201cthe U\u201d is to negotiate F&A.<\/p>\n It\u2019s a pain at times, but it\u2019s mostly OK.<\/p>\n And it makes me unpopular, I\u2019m sorry to say.<\/p>\n But, a job\u2019s a job \u2013 and mine just happens to be \u2026 F&A.<\/p>\n I know what you\u2019re thinking \u2013 what you\u2019re tempted to say.<\/p>\n So, I\u2019m not looking for pity or sympathy today.<\/p>\n Just please stay awake while I talk about \u2026 F&A!<\/p>\n \u2013Author Unknown<\/p>\n Graciously provided my Lori Ann (McAllester) Schulz, Senior Director, Research Administration, The University of Arizona<\/em><\/p>\n Minor PC edits by Tricia Callahan, Senior Research Education & Information Officer, Office of Sponsored Programs, Colorado State University<\/em><\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFacebook Facilities and Administrative Costs: It’s Still Indirect To Me December 18, 2018 Written by Lori Ann (McAllester) Schultz It was called\u00a0 \u201cindirect cost\u201d yesterday.
