NIST UAV Operator Certification

The CSU Drone Center NIST UAV Operator Certification course allows any interested UAV pilots to demonstrate their fundamental skills and precise control of remote aircraft through a series of standardized tests. These tests are based on NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) protocols, ensuring consistent, reliable, and comparable results. Currently, we offer Levels 1, 2, and 3 of the NIST Open Lane tests, designed to assess the core competencies essential for all UAV Operators.

After payment is completed using the registration link at the bottom of the page, you will be directed to a booking page to choose a time that works best. We currently perform tests Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9am-5pm.

Additional information about Levels 1-3 Open Test Lane can be found by following this link: Level 1-3 Open Test Lane and Scenarios | NIST

Levels 1 and 2 can be flown with most small drones that have camera capabilities.

Level 3 requires the pilot to take pictures and utilize the zoom function. The minimum recommended zoom is x28.

Any drone used for this test must have the capability to simultaneously use the zoom and camera functions.
